Childhood
Amy was born on May 3, 1968, in Flushing, Queens. Her mother, Pamela, worked as a nurse at a local hospital and her father, John, ran his own trucking business. Amy is not the only child in the family, she has a younger sister, Laura.
At the age of 7, her parents noticed Amy’s talent and enrolled her in the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Center. At the age of 17, Amy graduated from the New York High School of Performing Arts. Then she took a job with the national tour of Biloxi Blues. For ten years she worked in a regional theater on Broadway. Ryan got her first roles in plays by Neil LaBute and Arthur Miller.
Starting and developing a career
In 1987, Ryan made her off-Broadway debut. She played her first role as Hanna in A Shayna Maidel. In 1988, she landed roles in many other productions. Ryan’s real theatrical debut came in 1993 when she played the role of Tess in The Sisters Rosensweig.
In 2000, Amy received her first Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. This nomination came for her role as Sonya in Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. In 2001, she was nominated again for a Tony for her role as Stella Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire.
