Demand generates supply

In 2008, Dominique Caron was disappointed by the lack of products on the market suitable for her sensitive, prone-to-rash skin. Specifically, products had to be safe, environmentally friendly and effective. That’s when Caron decided to create her own natural care cosmetics that aligned with her ethical principles.

After years of trial and error research, Caron obtained certification in 2012 and founded Apoterra Skincare in Queens (the brand was then called Caru Skincare Co).

Only natural ingredients

Professionals at Apoterra Skincare use only natural products. Focusing on the beneficial properties of plants, they carefully develop nutrient-rich products. Natural ingredients are safe and provide long-lasting results. The complex of natural ingredients in Apoterra Skincare is filled with substances that nourish the skin, making it healthy and radiant.

In 2015, the brand received the Leaping Bunny Cruelty-Free certification. All ingredients are vegan (except for honey and beeswax). The products are not tested on animals, and they do not receive ingredients from suppliers who do so.

During production, the rate of raw material growth is taken into account. For example, bamboo grows quickly, while hardwood takes decades to renew. The company does not use sandalwood, which typically grows in the deciduous forests of tropical Asia and Ceylon, as it takes decades to grow. The brand also avoids ingredients derived from petroleum, as it is not a renewable resource.

However, not all natural components are safe. It all depends on the recipe and the ingredient itself. Take, for example, salt: a small dose in the diet is beneficial, while an excess can be fatal. Some natural ingredients can be harmful and irritate the skin. All laboratory-made components are tested for effectiveness and safety before being added to formulations.

The formulas of this cosmetics line do not contain carcinogens or substances that disrupt the endocrine system and cause irritation. In addition to plants, vegetable oils and minerals, the products also contain safe active ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid.

The anti-aging component vitamin C accelerates the synthesis of collagen and elastin. Since it gently brightens the skin, it can often be found in hyperpigmentation products. This vitamin improves the condition of acne-prone skin and helps those suffering from couperosis by strengthening the capillary walls.

Nicotinamide has the ability to slow down sebum secretion, contract enlarged pores, lighten pigment spots, enhance skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of small wrinkles, strengthen the hydro-lipid barrier, soothe redness and relieve inflammation.

Hyaluronic acid penetrates deeply into the skin, stimulating the natural synthesis of collagen and elastin in the dermis. Thus, the skin remains elastic and resilient for a long time, thereby preventing the natural aging processes and formation of wrinkles.

Fresh ingredients are always more effective and safe. That’s why all Apoterra Skincare products are created in small amounts and guaranteed to be fresh. All their warehouses and points of sale are regularly checked. If a customer buys an Apoterra Skincare product that has expired, the company will refund or exchange it for a fresher one.

Environmental consciousness

Plastic waste pollutes the soil, groundwater, seas and oceans. Toxic substances are released into the atmosphere when plastic is burned. Plastic pollution not only has a negative impact on ecology but also on the global economy. The tourism and fishing industries suffer the most. At the same time, building treatment facilities and creating plastic recycling methods require a lot of money.

Apoterra Skincare minimizes waste by using glass and biodegradable packaging materials instead of plastic. When creating the products, the brand controls the full cycle, from sourcing ingredients to the disposal of used bottles.

The brand’s materials have minimal impact on the environment. All boxes, labels, printed inserts and other paper products are made from recyclable materials and FSC-certified paper. This reduces the carbon footprint of the production process and the necessity to cut down trees for paper, thus saving old forests.

Glass cans and bottles are relatively easy to recycle, unlike plastic, which can only be recycled 2-4 times. Glass is less likely to contain toxic chemicals that may get into products or the environment. However, the brand still uses clean plastic for sealing containers with lids.

All orders are sent to customers in recyclable boxes and packaging. The brand suggests reusing transported materials to reduce the need for new products. The biodegradable filler is also great for children’s games. Simply wet the edges of the filler and glue them together to create figurines. Then, place them in a glass of water and watch them disappear.

The company sends all empty containers to the non-profit organization Pact, which collects cosmetic products and removes them from landfills. Upon receiving the packaging, Pact sorts it by material type and attempts to find the most optimal application for all of them. This means that the organization prefers to put used materials back into consumer packaging or durable goods rather than recycling them. However, some materials, such as different types of plastic, are included on the waste-to-energy list, that is, they cannot be mechanically or chemically recycled, only incinerated.

1 product = 1 tree

Interestingly, Apoterra Skincare plants one tree for every product sold. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, reduce erosion and replenish groundwater. They also help lower air temperatures. Trees are homes for many living creatures: birds and insects nest in their crowns and hollows, while animals and insects burrow holes near their trunks.

In addition, the brand supports organic agriculture and producers who are committed to sustainability. They pay attention to farming methods and certification. The brand checks if plants are grown organically, how fair trade is conducted, if there is evidence of sustainable agriculture, etc.

The company does not use endangered plants, such as sandalwood. As for active ingredients (such as vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid), the company chooses those produced from renewable resources. Apoterra Skincare audits suppliers every 2 years to ensure they follow all standards.
