There are several modernized versions of Jane Eyre\u2019s story, but Re Jane: A Novel is one of the most authentic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2015 book tells the story of Jane Re, a Korean-American orphan from Queens. She works in her strict uncle\u2019s grocery store and displays good manners. Wanting to change her life, Jane accepts an offer from two Brooklyn professors to become a nanny for their adopted Chinese daughter. Eventually, Re begins a romance with Ed Farley, but after some time, she leaves New York and heads to Seoul. Reconnecting with her family and experiencing modern Korea, she begins to wonder if Ed Farley is really the one she needs. Later, she returns to Queens, where she tries to find a balance between the two cultures that are close to her. Thus, this novel is a story of love, finding strength, and living not just for obligations to others but also for oneself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, another popular work by Patricia Park, Imposter Syndrome & Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim, was published. At the center of the story is a teenage girl, Alejandra Kim, who tries to adapt to the multicultural environment of Queens, the most diverse part of the U.S., as well as in an elite school and even in her own home. Predominantly white classmates and teachers disrespect the girl with a Spanish name and Korean appearance. Meanwhile, in her home neighborhood, Jackson Heights, Alejandra faces pressure for being \u201cnot Latin enough.\u201d Even at home, she feels abandoned. The only way to improve her life is to get into college and move away. With her wit and strong character, she confronts the challenges she has been hiding from for so long. On the path to adulthood, Alejandra learns what it means to carve out a space for herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, Park released the novel What\u2019s Eating Jackie Oh? The book is about a teenage girl of Korean descent, named Jackie, who tries to balance her dream of becoming a chef with the cultural expectations of her family. For her parents, success is defined by getting into an Ivy League university. However, Jackie feels truly happy when watching the cooking show Burn Off! with her grandparents. On Saturdays, she works at their restaurant, where she learns about the culinary world in practice. Later, the girl becomes a contestant on her favorite TV show, where she must battle mental health issues, the criticism of nitpicky moms, and aggression. Above all, she seeks to prove to herself, her family, and everyone else that she truly knows how to cook.
